Underscoring that the only credible measure of progress is the actual condition on the ground in Gaza, the head of United Nations humanitarian efforts in the Strip told the Security Council today that sufficient political will is sorely needed to ensure effective humanitarian operations amid restrictions, security incidents and continued suffering.

Flooding continues to worsen across Chad, with nearly 1.5 million people now impacted. Chadian authorities, UN agencies and partners are providing urgent aid, and the UN Acting Emergency Relief Coordinator has increased the allocation of the Central Emergency Response Fund to support the response from $5 to $8 million.

Against the backdrop of the recent killing of six Israeli hostages, a mounting Palestinian death toll in Gaza and increasing settler violence in the occupied West Bank, speakers in the Security Council today urged Israel and Hamas to reach a deal that includes a ceasefire and unconditional release of those still held captive.
