In Bangladesh, which has suffered from flash floods, triggered by heavy rainfall and upstream water flows from India, the United Nations team on the ground are providing water purification tablets, hygiene kits and food.

The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reports that more than 200,000 people — that is about 9 per cent of Gaza’s current population — have now been displaced over the last week in the wake of evacuation orders issued by the Israel Defense Forces.

The United Nations continues to support countries in the Caribbean that have been impacted by Hurricane Beryl. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that most of the health facilities assessed in Grenada and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines are now operational, despite sustaining damage.

In Ukraine, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs says that attacks on Kharkiv, in the east of the country, continued over the weekend and today. Local authorities report civilian casualties, including among children, and damage to civilian infrastructure.

The United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has appointed Mohamed Yahya of Somalia as the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Pakistan, with the host Government’s approval. He took up his post on 21 January, and he will also serve as the UN Humanitarian Coordinator in the country.

In Algeria, the United Nations launched the Sahrawi Refugee Response Plan, covering the next two years — 2024-2025. The plan calls for $214 million to ensure food stability, a reliable water supply as well as to address the nutritional requirements of people living in camps in Tindouf.
