STATES PARTIES TO LAW OF SEA CONVENTION ELECT SEVEN NEW JUDGES

In two meetings today, the States Parties to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea elected seven new judges to the International Tribunal of the Law of the Sea for nine-year terms, beginning 1 October.

STATES PARTIES TO LAW OF SEA CONVENTION OPEN TWELFTH MEETING

The States Parties to the Convention on the Law of the Sea this morning opened their twelfth meeting by welcoming three new members -- Bangladesh, Madagascar and Hungary -- as they marked the Convention’s twentieth anniversary. The total number of parties to the Convention now stands at 138.

NEW YORK, 8 February (UN Information Service) -- Professor Elizabeth Mann Borgese, who for more than three decades was one of the driving forces in the search for peaceful uses of the oceans and a fair and equitable distribution of their resources, died today in Switzerland at the age of 83.
