SALT LAKE CITY, 28 August — At a first-of-its-kind United Nations gathering in the western United States, representatives of non-governmental and faith-based organizations, as well as educators, students and individual activists from Utah and around the world adopted today an outcome document outlining a global vision for inclusive and sustainable cities and communities by 2030, with youth drafting and adopting a stand-alone climate compact.

Activists battling climate change, a former child soldier and health workers pioneering new treatments around the world are among thousands of participants who will gather in Salt Lake City, Utah, from 26 to 28 August at the sixty-eighth annual United Nations Civil Society Conference for a global conversation on building inclusive and sustainable cities and communities.

Continuing its resumed session today, the Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations recommended 27 organizations for special consultative status with the Economic and Social Council and deferred action on 61 applications, while also approving one request for status reclassification and postponing action on one other such request.

The Civil Society Organizations Association Committee of the United Nations Department of Global Communications approved today the applications of 19 civil society organizations to be associated with the Department.  The Committee’s meeting also endorsed the disassociation of two non-governmental organizations (NGOs).  This brings the total number of civil society organizations associated with the Department to 1,519.
