SECRETARY-GENERAL EXPRESSES CONCERN OVER SUDDEN OUTBREAK OF TENSION BETWEEN GREECE AND TURKEY

19960130 The following is a statement attributable to the Spokesman for the Secretary-General:

The Secretary-General is concerned by the sudden outbreak of tension between Greece and Turkey as a result of incidents in the neighbourhood of the uninhabited islet of Imia in the Aegean Sea.

19960131 Unanimously Adopts Resolution 1042 (1996); In Absence of 'Meaningful Progress, Will Consider Phased Withdrawal

The Security Council this afternoon extended the mandate of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) until 31 May.

SECURITY COUNCIL AUTHORIZES DEPLOYMENT OF 100 MILITARY OBSERVERS TO EASTERN SLAVONIA, BARANJA AND WESTERN SIRMIUM

The Security Council this morning authorized the deployment of 100 military observers for six months as part of the United Nations Transitional Administration for Eastern Slavonia, Baranja and Western Sirmium (UNTAES).

The Council took that action by unanimously adopting resolution 1043 (1996).
