United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres today announced the appointment of Major General (retired) Michael Beary of Ireland as Head of the United Nations Mission to Support the Hudaydah Agreement (UNMHA) and Chair of the Redeployment Coordination Committee.

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees said it is stepping up its aid delivery to help a growing number of Venezuelan refugees and migrants crossing by foot across Chile’s northern border with Bolivia.  Local authorities report that 400-500 people from Venezuela have crossed into Chile daily since November.

Security Council Committee on Somalia Briefed by Special Representative of Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict

On 10 December 2021, the Security Council Committee pursuant to resolution 751 (1992) concerning Somalia (“the Committee”) was briefed by the Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict, Pramila Patten.  During her briefing she elaborated on patterns and trends of sexual violence in Somalia.  She also presented recommendations to the Committee.  Her briefing was followed by an interactive dialogue with Committee members who expressed support for her important work and encouraged the continued exchange of information between her office and the Panel of Experts on Somalia.

The Security Council today adopted a resolution enabling the 15-member organ to consider during mandate renewals the role peace operations could play in helping States to stem the flow of illicit weapons, in line with related arms embargoes.

United Nations Department of Global Communications Approves 19 Civil Society Organizations for Association

On Friday, 10 December, the UN Department of Global Communications Civil Society Association Committee selected 19 civil society organizations for formal association with the Department.  The organizations join from 8 countries, including Bangladesh, France, Greece, India, Pakistan, Republic of Korea, Saudi Arabia and the United States, highlighting the diversity of the new group and the importance of collaboration.
