20000110The Security Council met this morning in an open debate on the impact of AIDS on peace and security in Africa. The debate marked the first time that the Council has discussed a health issue as a threat to peace and security. The meeting, which lasted for more than seven hours, was addressed by over 40 speakers.

20000112An anti-terrorism convention with a new focus - targeting those who finance terrorism was opened for signature on 10 January at the United Nations in New York. By the end of the day, the Convention had been signed by seven countries: Finland; France; Malta; Netherlands; Sri Lanka; United Kingdom and the United States.
