The Security Council this afternoon called for immediate military action by the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, in cooperation with United Nations peacekeepers, to “neutralize” a Rwandan armed group that continued to threaten civilians in the eastern part of the country after a 2 January deadline to disband.

Secretary-General Appoints Joakim Reiter of Sweden as Deputy Secretary-General of United Nations Conference on Trade and Development

The Secretary-General, outraged by the attack today against the French magazine, Charlie Hebdo, called the horrendous, unjustifiable and cold-blooded crime a direct assault on democracy, the media and freedom of expression.  He urged the international community to stand in solidarity for freedom of expression and tolerance.
