The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) continues to receive deeply disturbing reports of sexual violence, including rape and gang rape, by soldiers in uniform and in plain clothes against civilians, including minors.  Since the start of the current violence, the Mission has documented at least 120 such cases.

Continuing its coordination and management session, the Economic and Social Council today adopted 5 resolutions and 11 decisions on topics ranging from crime prevention and criminal justice to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and narcotic drugs to the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues.

New Security Council Text Adapts Mandate of United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Central African Republic

The Security Council today extended until 15 November 2017 the mandate of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA), adapting it to the new circumstances prevailing in that country.

The Security Council today extended the mandate of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) for six months, until 31 January 2017, encouraging the country’s Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot leaders to grasp with determination the current opportunity to secure a comprehensive and durable settlement of the crisis dividing their island nation.

Secretary-General Appoints Major General Mohammad Humayun Kabir of Bangladesh Force Commander of United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today announced the appointment of Major General Mohammad Humayun Kabir of Bangladesh as Force Commander of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP).  Major General Kabir will succeed Major General Kristin Lund of Norway, who will complete her assignment on 29 July 2016.

General Assembly Adopts Texts on Antimicrobial Resistance, Third Industrial Development Decade for Africa, Formalizing Ties with Migration Entity

Taking consensus action on a range of draft resolutions today, the General Assembly, decided to convene a high-level meeting on antimicrobial resistance, proclaimed the period 2016-2025 as the Third Industrial Development Decade for Africa, and approved an agreement institutionalizing the relationship between the United Nations and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
