The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees condemned the attack on its compound in South Sudan's north-western town of Bunj, in which two United Nations staff were injured when demonstrators forcefully entered the premises and looted offices and residences.  Peacekeepers were immediately deployed to re-establish order.

General Assembly Unanimously Adopts Resolution Urging Economic and Social Council to Strengthen Leadership, Policy Guidance Role

The General Assembly today unanimously adopted a resolution calling on the Economic and Social Council to continue strengthening its leadership and policy guidance role, while placing particular focus on addressing new and emerging economic, social and environmental issues.

The top United Nations human rights official voiced acute concern today over developments in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, warning that any further violence risks inflaming the already fragile situation and may pose threats “across a far broader region”.

The Security Council noted today the conclusion of the voter registration process in Afghanistan on 18 July, in which 8.9 million people registered — including more than 3 million women — to vote in parliamentary and district council elections on 20 October 2018, and in presidential elections in 2019.

The United Nations Refugee Agency today welcomed recent actions taken by several European countries to collectively end a stand-off on the Mediterranean, where some 450 refugees and migrants had been stranded at sea amid a battle over disembarkation.  France, Germany, Italy, Malta, Spain and Portugal have agreed to land the ships and share the processing of these people.
