United Nations TACKLES FOOD INSECURITY IN KENYA


NEW YORK, 22 July (OCHA) -- United Nations agencies will soon be appealing for international aid on behalf of the Kenyan Government, which has requested assistance to help overcome poor rainfall and severe crop failure.

UN RESPONDS TO FLOODS, LANDSLIDES IN AFGHANISTAN

un humanitarian office offers emergency AID AFTER TAJIKISTAN FLOODS, LANDSLIDES


NEW YORK, 20 July (OCHA) -- The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) is allocating $20,000 from its Emergency Reserve Fund to help provide emergency supplies in Tajikistan, where unusually heavy rains have resulted in massive floods and landslides.  The grant follows Tajikistan’s request for international assistance.

NUMBER OF INTERNALLY DISPLACED PERSONS INCREASES IN DARFUR,

SAYS UN HUMANITARIAN AFFAIRS OFFICE


NEW YORK, 19 July (OCHA) -– Last month, the number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Darfur grew by approximately 100,000.  As of 1 July, there were more than 1 million IDPs in the region.  Progress has been made in meeting their needs, although significant gaps remain.

APPEAL FOR AID AFTER NICARAGUA FLOODS, MUDSLIDES


NEW YORK, 14 July (OCHA) -- United Nations agencies have requested just under $1 million to meet the needs of 5,751 people affected by the recent floods and mudslides in Nicaragua.  The appeal, covering a period of three months, intends to raise funds for health care, agricultural rehabilitation, food aid, education and psycho-social therapy, among other things.

UN REPORTS SLOW PROGRESS IN LIBERIA RECONSTRUCTION


NEW YORK, 2 July (OCHA) -- Slow progress in Liberia’s reconstruction is due to the failure of donors to contribute the $540 million they pledged at a donors’ conference in New York in February 2004, according to the United Nations.
