GENERAL ASSEMBLY ELECTS TWO ADDITIONAL JUDGES


FOR RWANDA INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL TRIBUNAL


The General Assembly this morning elected Winston Churchill Matanzima Maqutu (Lesotho) and Arlette Ramaroson (Madagascar) as judges for the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR), following two rounds of voting.  Their terms of office will commence as soon as possible.

The General Assembly this morning, appalled by the 26 February edict of Afghanistan’s Taliban ordering the destruction of all statues and non-Islamic shrines in the country, strongly urged the Taliban to halt its implementation.

GENERAL ASSEMBLY ADOPTS RESOLUTION ON TITLE AND ARRANGEMENTS


FOR JUNE 2001 SPECIAL SESSION ON HIV/AIDS


At a brief meeting this afternoon the General Assembly decided that its forthcoming June special session would be referred to as the "special session of the General Assembly on HIV/AIDS".
