The Secretary-General departed New York on the morning of Tuesday, 28 April, to begin an official trip to Africa, where he was scheduled to visit eight countries: Ethiopia, Djibouti, Kenya, United Republic of Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda and Eritrea.

The Secretary-General arrived in Beijing from Moscow in the morning of Tuesday, 31 March. After a few hours rest, he met in the afternoon with Vice Premier Qian Qichen. The Vice Premier thanked the Secretary-General for the role he had played in defusing the Iraq crisis.

Upon arrival in Damascus in the evening of Saturday, 21 March, the Secretary-General was greeted by the Syrian Foreign Minister, Farouk Al-Sharaa. He then dropped in on a celebration of Ireland's National Day by the personnel of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) and the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO).
