Security Council

The Security Council was meeting amid a dangerous escalation of the crisis in Ukraine, with intensified fighting in the last 48 hours in the south-east, Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Jeffrey Feltman told the 15-member body today, urging an immediate focus on political solutions and dialogue.

Aid access in Syria had begun to improve, but only the end of conflict would relieve the dire situation of civilians there who continued to die by the thousands and were now subjected to extremist outrages, a top United Nations humanitarian official told the Security Council this morning.

The Security Council this morning extended the mandate of the African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur for 10 months, until 30 June 2015, while it requested further realignment of the mission’s activities in accordance with recent strategic reviews.

The Security Council today, reiterating its concern about the alarming situation in the Sahel region, reaffirmed its continued commitment to address the complex security and political challenges in the region.

On 26 August 2014, the Security Council Committee pursuant to resolutions 1267 (1999) and 1989 (2011) concerning Al-Qaida and associated individuals and entities removed the name of the individual below from the Al-Qaida Sanctions List.
