SECURITY COUNCIL CALLS FOR IMMEDIATE END TO FIGHTING IN SIERRA LEONE

The Security Council this afternoon called for an immediate end to the fighting in Sierra Leone and urged the Revolutionary United Front whose attempt to overthrow the Government in 1991 began the conflict, to take advantage of the Secretary-General's offer of good offices to facilitate negotiations.

Unanimously Decides on Conditional Suspension of General Sanctions Against Federal Republic of Yugoslavia Subject to Follow-Up of Peace Agreement

 

The Security Council this afternoon decided to end the arms embargo on the former Yugoslavia and to indefinitely suspend a series of sanctions on the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (Serbia and Montenegro) which have been in place since May 1992.

SECURITY COUNCIL CONDEMNS CONTINUED GRAVE HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS IN BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA, CROATIA

19951109 By Resolution 1019 (1995), Demands Bosnian Serbs Allow Immediate Access by UNHCR, ICRC, Other Agencies

The Security Council this evening, concerned by continued reports of grave human rights violations in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia, condemned in the strongest possible terms all such violations.

The Security Council this afternoon decided that the election to fill the vacancy on the International Court of Justice will be held on 28 February 1996.

By adopting without a vote resolution 1018 (1995), in accordance with Article 14 of the Statute of the Court, the Security Council set the date for its simultaneous meeting with the General Assembly to elect the new member of the Court, who will serve out the remainder of the nine-year term of Judge Andres Aguilar Mawdsley (Venezuela), until 5 February 2000. Judge Mawdsley died on 24 October.
