SECRETARY-GENERAL CONCERNED ABOUT PRECARIOUS SITUATION IN CONGO-BRAZZAVILLE

19970616 The following statement was issued on Saturday, 14 June, by Secretary-General Kofi Annan:

The Secretary-General continues to be concerned about the precarious situation in Congo-Brazzaville. He is gratified, though, that the parties have agreed to seek a negotiated solution to the conflict, and he urges them to respect the cease-fire.

SECRETARY-GENERAL MEETS WITH FOREIGN MINISTER OF GUATEMALA

The Secretary-General met today with Eduardo Stein Barillas, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Guatemala. The Secretary-General and the Minister discussed the presence of the United Nations in Guatemala.

DECOLONIZATION COMMITTEE URGES ARGENTINA, UNITED KINGDOM TO SEEK NEGOTIATED SOLUTIONS TO FALKLANDS (MALVINAS) SOVEREIGNTY DISPUTE

The Special Committee on Decolonization this morning asked the Governments of Argentina and the United Kingdom to resume negotiations, as soon as possible, towards a peaceful solution to the sovereignty dispute over the Falkland Islands (Malvinas).
