SECRETARY-GENERAL MEETS WITH FOREIGN MINISTER OF GUATEMALA

19970616 The following statement was issued on Friday, 13 June, by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

The Secretary-General met today with Eduardo Stein Barillas, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Guatemala. The Secretary-General and the Minister discussed the presence of the United Nations in Guatemala.

The Secretary-General, having considered the report of an internal review of the actions of the United Nations Verification Mission in Guatemala (MINUGUA) on its handling of a specific human rights verification case, expressed his complete confidence in MINUGUA and in his Special Representative, Jean Arnault.

The Secretary-General expressed his hope that the implementation of the Peace Accords, with the cooperation of all parties can now move ahead as envisaged. He congratulated the Foreign Minister on the successes achieved in the demobilization of the former combatants and on other progress in the implementation of the Peace Accords. The Secretary-General called upon all sectors of Guatemalan society to give their full support to the continued implementation of the peace process.
