Following is today’s press statement on Sierra Leone by the President of the Security Council, Kishore Mahbubani (Singapore):


Members of the Council welcomed the peaceful conduct of the Sierra Leone presidential and parliamentary elections yesterday.  They also noted the role of the United Kingdom and the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL) in bringing this about.

GENEVA, 15 May (UN Information Service) -- The thirty-eighth session of the International Law Seminar, which has been organized on the basis of General Assembly resolutions every year since 1965 by the United Nations Office at Geneva on the occasion of the annual session of the International Law Commission, will take place at the Palais des Nations from 21 May to 7 June 2002.

TO REDUCE NUCLEAR WEAPONS

The Secretary-General welcomes the announcement that the United States of America and the Russian Federation have agreed to sign a treaty to reduce their deployed strategic nuclear weapons substantially by the year 2012.
