TRUSTEESHIP COUNCIL MEETS, ELECTS NEW OFFICERS


Meeting for the first time since 1998, the Trusteeship Council this afternoon elected Adam Thomson of the United Kingdom as its President and Michel Duclos of France as its Vice-President.  Both will serve for five year terms in their posts.

IRAQ TO BEGIN RETURNING KUWAITI ARCHIVES TO KUWAIT ON 19 OCTOBER


The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:


Tomorrow, Saturday, 19 October, Iraq will commence returning to Kuwait the Kuwaiti archives, which were taken by Iraq following its occupation of Kuwait in 1990.  The modalities for the transfer were arranged with Iraq and Kuwait by the United Nations in August 2002.

SECRETARY-GENERAL APPOINTS NEW MILITARY ADVISER

IN PEACEKEEPING OPERATIONS DEPARTMENT


The Secretary-General has appointed Major General Patrick Cammaert as Military Adviser in the Department of Peacekeeping Operations.  The appointment will become effective in November.


Major General Cammaert, a national of the Netherlands, will succeed Major General Tim Ford from Australia.

SECURITY COUNCIL DECIDES TO LIFT TRAVEL BAN AGAINST UNITA MEMBERS, EFFECTIVE

14 NOVEMBER; EXTENDS ANGOLA MONITORING MECHANISM UNTIL 19 DECEMBER

The Security Council decided to extend the mandate of the Angola monitoring mechanism for a period of two months, until 19 December 2002, as it met on the situation in that country this afternoon.
