As landmines and explosive remnants of war continue to impact the lives of thousands of people each year in more than 70 countries, this year’s commemoration of the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action is focused on the needs of the ever-growing number of victims and survivors, while celebrating the vigorous movement towards the United Nations vision of a world free from the threat of landmines and explosive remnants of war.

The General Assembly, in its resolution 64/71 of 4 December 2009, approved the convening by the Secretary-General of the twenty-fifth session of the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf in New York from 15 March to 23 April 2010 on the understanding that the following periods will be used for the technical examination of submissions at the Geographic Information System laboratories and other technical facilities of the Division: 15 March to 1 April and 19 to 23 April.

On 30 March 2010, the Security Council Committee established pursuant to resolution 1521 (2003) concerning Liberia adopted revised guidelines for the conduct of its work. The guidelines were revised to take account of the provisions contained in resolution 1903 (2009), which terminated the arms embargo with regard to the Government of Liberia and imposed an arms embargo with regard to all non-governmental entities and individuals operating in the territory of Liberia.

On 30 March 2010, the Security Council Committee pursuant to resolutions 751 (1992) and 1907 (2009) concerning Somalia and Eritrea adopted revised guidelines for the conduct of its work. The guidelines were revised to take account of the provisions contained in resolution 1907 (2009), which imposed an arms embargo, a travel ban and an assets freeze on Eritrea.
