Welcoming actions by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) to pursue a more systematic engagement with the United Nations, the General Assembly, through a consensus resolution, encouraged both parties to work closely in various fields, in particular, peace and security, economic and social development, international law, and human rights and gender issues.

While welcoming the improved financial situation of the United Nations at year-end 2013 and further progress since then, delegates in the Fifth Committee (Administrative and Budgetary) today expressed concern over the lag in payments to countries providing troops and police to peacekeeping operations.

ANKARA, 13 May — The International Meeting held a discussion this afternoon on the international community’s role in promoting a just solution, examining the question of Jerusalem in relation to permanent status negotiations, international approaches to that issue, and the role of the United Nations, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, other international organizations and non-State actors.

The Fifth Committee (Administrative and Budgetary) today heard a call to adopt a resolution on cross-cutting aspects of United Nations peacekeeping operations this year, as the body examined the Secretariat’s various reports on that matter.

Recognizing the negative socioeconomic impact of non-communicable diseases on nations around the world, the General Assembly decided today to convene a high-level meeting in July to review and assess global progress towards preventing and controlling such illnesses.
