"The race to nuclear disengagement and disarmament should become as relentless as was the nuclear arms race during the cold war", Secretary- General Boutros Boutros-Ghali told the First Committee (Disarmament and International Security) this morning as it began its general debate for its current session.

Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali told the General Assembly this morning that considerable and widespread progress had been made to improve the health, nutrition, education and protection of the world's children, major goals set at the 1990 World Summit for Children.

FIRST COMMITTEE HOLDS ORGANIZATIONAL SESSION

19961010 The First Committee (Disarmament and International Security) this morning elected its Vice-Chairmen and Rapporteur and approved the programme of work for its current session.

Elected as Vice-Chairmen were Andre Mernier (Belgium) and Andelfo Garcia (Columbia). Parfait Onanga (Gabon) was elected Rapporteur. Alyaksandr Sychou (Belarus) was elected Chairman on 17 September.
