United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced today the appointment of Tarek Mitri of Lebanon as his new Special Representative and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL). Mr. Mitri will succeed Ian Martin of the United Kingdom, who will complete his assignment on 14 October 2012. The Secretary-General is grateful to Mr. Martin for his dedicated service during his tenure in UNSMIL over the past year.

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today announced the appointment of James W. Rawley of the United States as Deputy Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, at the level of Assistant Secretary-General. Mr. Rawley will also serve as United Nations Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator for the Occupied Palestinian Territory.

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today announced the appointment of Moustapha Soumaré of Mali as his Deputy Special Representative for the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO), where he will also serve as United Nations Resident Coordinator, Humanitarian Coordinator and Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has today confirmed the appointment of Jamal Benomar as his Special Adviser on Yemen, at the level of Assistant Secretary-General, to lead strengthened good offices for Yemen during the country’s transition.

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appointed the incoming Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information, Peter Launsky-Tieffenthal of Austria, as Coordinator for Multilingualism, in implementation of General Assembly resolutions 54/64 of 1999 and 61/266 of 2007, by which the General Assembly requested the Secretary-General to appoint a senior official as coordinator of the questions relating to multilingualism throughout the Secretariat.
