New Permanent Representative of Ecuador Presents Credentials

The new Permanent Representative of Ecuador to the United Nations, Luis Benigno Gallegos, presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General António Guterres today.

Before his latest appointment, Mr. Gallegos served as his country’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva since February 2018, a post he also held from 2011 to 2014 and from 1997 to 2000.

He was Ambassador to the United States from 2005 to 2011 and served two previous terms as Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York from April 2002 to March 2005 and from August to October 2005.  He was Ambassador to Australia from March to August 2005 and to El Salvador from 1994 to 1997.

Since joining the diplomatic service in 1966, he has held several high-level positions within the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, including as Acting Minister on several occasions.  Between 1985 and 1989 he served as Minister-Chargé d’affaires in Bulgaria.  From 1979 to 1980 he was Chargé d’affaires in Washington, D.C., and was Deputy Permanent Representative to the Organization of American States from 1978 to 1979.

Mr. Gallegos received a Master of Arts from Tufts University's Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy and Harvard University, having previously been granted a Law degree and a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from the Central University of Ecuador.

Born in Quito on 13 December 1946, he is married with two children.
