New Permanent Representative of Cyprus Presents Credentials

The new Permanent Representative of Cyprus to the United Nations, Komelios Korneliou, presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General António Guterres today.

Before his latest appointment, the career diplomat was his country’s Permanent Representative to the European Union.  From 2010 to 2011, he served as Ambassador to France and Permanent Delegate to the Paris-based United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Mr. Korneliou served as Director of the Diplomatic Office of the Minister for Foreign Affairs from 2008 to 2010.  As Ambassador to Austria between 2005 and 2008, he served concurrently as Permanent Representative to the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty and the United Nations Office in Vienna, with parallel accreditation to Slovenia, Croatia, Slovakia and Liechtenstein.

Between 2000 and 2005, Mr. Korneliou was Deputy Permanent Representative to the European Union, having previously served as Director of the Office of the Permanent Secretary in Foreign Ministry from 1998 to 2000.

Mr. Korneliou holds a master’s degree in political science and philosophy from Ludwig Maximillian University in Germany.

Born on 29 June 1963, he is married and has one daughter.
