United Nations Conference on Disarmament Issues, to Be Held in Japan, Highlights Working towards Nuclear-Weapon-Free World
NEW YORK, 18 August (Office for Disarmament Affairs) — The twenty-fifth United Nations Conference on Disarmament Issues will take place in Hiroshima, Japan from 26 to 28 August. This event is organized by the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs, through its Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Asia and the Pacific in cooperation with the Government of Japan, and this year’s hosts, the Prefecture and City of Hiroshima.
The Conference will be attended by representatives of States, local governments, the United Nations and other inter-governmental organizations, academia, civil society, media and students from Japan.
Since 1989, many cities throughout Japan have hosted the United Nations Conference on Disarmament Issues, an event which is recognized as an important forum for frank dialogue and exchange of views on current pressing security and disarmament-related challenges facing the international community.
Coinciding with the seventieth anniversary of the United Nations, as well as the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, this year’s Conference will discuss outcomes and next steps related to the 2015 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, the significance of nuclear-weapon-free zones, the humanitarian consequences of nuclear weapons and the role of civil society and education in renewing the efforts towards realizing the ultimate goal of a world free of nuclear weapons.
With the participation of members of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Group of Eminent Persons, the Conference will also address a number of important issues regarding the Treaty’s role in nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation.
The Conference is financed through voluntary contributions made to the Office for Disarmament Affairs by the Government of Japan and contributions by the hosting Prefecture and City of Hiroshima.
