ASSEMBLY ELECTS JORDAN TO FILL LAST REMAINING VACANCY ON ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL COUNCIL

19951116 Completes Election of 18 Members to Three-Year Terms on Council

The General Assembly this afternoon completed the election of 18 members to the 54-member Economic and Social Council with the election of Jordan from the Asian Group of States to fill the last remaining vacancy on the Council.

The new members, who will serve three-year terms beginning on 1 January 1996 are as follows: Argentina, Bangladesh, Canada, Central African Republic, China, Czech Republic, Finland, Gabon, Guyana, Jordan, Lebanon, Nicaragua, Romania, Russian Federation, Sweden, Togo, Tunisia and United Kingdom.

They will fill seats being vacated at the end of the current year by Bahamas, Bhutan, Canada, China, Cuba, Denmark, Gabon, Libya, Mexico, Nigeria, Norway, Republic of Korea, Romania, Russian Federation, Sri Lanka, Ukraine, United Kingdom and Zaire. States are eligible for immediate re-election.

Two more rounds of balloting were necessary this afternoon, following the two held this morning, to fill the 18th vacancy.

The results of the third round of voting were as follows:

Number of ballot papers: 157 Number of invalid ballots: 0 Number of valid ballots: 157 Abstentions: 0 Number of Members voting: 157 Required majority: 105

Cambodia: 67 Jordan: 90

Fourth Ballot

As neither State received the necessary two thirds majority of the vote, a fourth round of voting was held, the results of which were as follows:

Number of ballot papers: 152 Number of invalid ballots: 0 Number of valid ballots: 152 Abstentions: 0 Number of Members voting: 152 Required majority: 102

Number of Votes Obtained:

Cambodia: 49 Jordan: 103

Having obtained the required two thirds majority, Jordan was elected a member of the Economic and Social Council for a three-year term beginning 1 January 1996.

The Assembly will meet at 10 a.m. tomorrow, Friday, 17 November, to consider restructuring and revitalization of the United Nations in the economic, social and related fields.
