The Secretary-General arrived in Guatemala City, Guatemala, in the afternoon of Monday, 20 July. That evening he met with President Alvaro Arzu Irigoyen of Guatemala at the Presidential Palace. Among other things, they reviewed the process of implementation of the Guatemala peace accords.

On Monday, 29 June, the Secretary-General began a visit to Nigeria in an effort to facilitate the process of the country's return to civilian rule. In Abuja he was welcomed by Chief Tom Ikimi, the Nigerian Foreign Minister, who hosted a dinner in his honour.

Secretary-General Kofi Annan left New York on Thursday, 25 June, for a European tour during which he spoke at the annual conference of a private foundation in Ditchley, England, and chaired a panel discussion on human rights in Vienna, Austria.
