The following was issued today by the Security Council Committee established pursuant to resolution 864 (1993) concerning the situation in Angola:
Despite auspicious signs at the beginning of 1998 that peaceful solutions would resolve some long-standing conflicts and crises, by the end of the year the overall global security landscape looked grim, with renewed bombing of Iraq, as well as continued conflict in Africa.
The Security Council this evening stressed the importance of dialogue and national reconciliation for the restoration of lasting peace and stability in Sierra Leone.
