The Security Council this morning decided to establish a United Nations Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea consisting of up to 100 military observers and the necessary civilian support staff in anticipation of a peacekeeping operation subject to future authorization.
Political developments in East Timor, the killing of a United Nations peacekeeper and the continuing plight of refugees in the neighbouring Indonesian province of West Timor were the dominant themes this morning as the Security Council held an open meeting on the situation in East Timor.

The Security Council this morning decided to extend the mandate of the United Nations Observer Mission in Georgia (UNOMIG) for a further six months, until 31 January 2001.
Angolas mineral and human wealth had the potential to eradicate poverty in a relatively short time, make it a prosperous country and promote the well-being of all its people, given the political will to make peace a reality, Ibrahim Gambari, Under-Secretary-General and Special Adviser on Africa, told the Security Council today during its open meeting on Angola.

The Security Council this morning decided to extend the mandate of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) for a further six months, until 31 January 2001.
Child soldiering must be curbed by mobilizing political pressure, addressing the economic, social and political factors behind the phenomenon, and enhancing capacities on the ground for receiving and rehabilitating child soldiers, Olara Otunnu, the Secretary-General's Special Representative on Children and Armed Conflict, told the Security Council today.
