Security Council


The Security Council would hold five briefings, 11 closed consultations and three formal debates in January, covering the Middle East, justice and the rule of law, and cooperation between the United Nations and the African Union, according to the programme of work outlined by Council President Baso Sangqu (South Africa) at Headquarters today.

On 16 November 2011, the Security Council Committee established pursuant to resolution 1533 (2004) concerning the Democratic Republic of the Congo considered the final report of the Group of Experts on the Democratic Republic of the Congo (document S/2011/738), which is available on the Committee’s website: http://www.un.org/sc/committees/1533/egroup.shtml.

On 23 December 2011, the Security Council Committee established pursuant to resolution 1521 (2003) concerning Liberia updated the list of individuals and entities subject to the travel ban imposed by paragraph 4 (c) of resolution 1521 (2003) as renewed by paragraph 1 (a) of resolution 1579 (2004) and to the assets freeze imposed by paragraph 1 of Security Council resolution 1532 (2004).

On 28 December 2011, the Security Council Al-Qaida Sanctions Committee removed the names of the six entities below from the Al-Qaida Sanctions List after concluding its consideration of a de-listing request submitted through the Ombudsperson established pursuant to Security Council resolution 1904 (2009), and after considering the Comprehensive Report of the Ombudsperson on this de-listing request.

Demanding that the Governments of Sudan and South Sudan redeploy all remaining military and police personnel from the disputed Abyei Area “immediately and without preconditions”, the Security Council this afternoon extended the mandate of the United Nations Interim Security Force in that locale, known as UNISFA, for a further five months.
