Security Council Grants One-year Mandate Extension for Experts Panel Monitoring Sanctions Imposed on Individuals, Entities Impeding Peace in Sudan

Expressing regret that individuals affiliated with the Government of Sudan and armed groups continued to perpetrate violence against civilians in Darfur, the Security Council today decided to extend until 17 February 2013 the mandate of the Panel of Experts that monitors the arms embargo and sanctions imposed on those impeding peace in Sudan, while tightening the measures involved.

Security Council 1988 Committee Amends Eleven Entries on Its Sanctions List

On 13 February 2012, the Security Council Committee established pursuant to resolution 1988 (2011) enacted the amendments specified with strikethrough and underline in the entries below to its List (the 1988 Sanctions List) of individuals and entities subject to the assets freeze, travel ban and arms embargo set out in paragraph 1 of Security Council resolution 1988 (2011) adopted under Chapter VII of the Charter of the United Nations.

Ireland’s Foreign Minister, Chair of Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, Briefs Security Council on Priorities for 2012

Outlining the priorities for the 2012 term as the Chair of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), Ireland’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade stressed today that his country would be a loyal steward of the regional organization’s concept of a “common, comprehensive and indivisible security” and work to enhance its cooperation with the United Nations.

The Russian Federation and China vetoed today a Security Council draft resolution that would have demanded that all parties in Syria — both Government forces and armed opposition groups — stop all violence and reprisals, ending days of intense negotiations in New York as diplomats laboured to bring a halt to the deadly 10-month crackdown on anti-Government protests in the Middle Eastern country.
