The following Security Council press statement was issued today by Council President Vitaly I. Churkin (Russian Federation):

With fresh violence erupting around the holy sites of the Old City of Jerusalem, Israelis and Palestinians should not let fear triumph, but should create conducive conditions for resuming peace negotiations, a senior United Nations official told the Security Council today.

Sanctions imposed on Iran under successive Security Council resolutions remained in full effect until the 15-member body received confirmation from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) that the country had taken a set of nuclear-related actions in accordance with resolution 2231 (2015), the head of the designated sanctions committee said today.

A training course for national points of contact of States in the Asia-Pacific region for the implementation of Security Council resolution 1540 (2004) took place in Qingdao, China, from 7 to 11 September.  The course, hosted by the Government of China on behalf of the Security Council’s 1540 Committee, was the first of its kind.  The 1540 Committee hopes that the course, which is an excellent example of the regional approach it favours, will be replicated in other regions of the world.

Affirming the importance of the work of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) to facilitate a nationally led political solution to the country’s increasing challenges, the Security Council this afternoon extended the Mission’s mandate until 15 March 2016.

With Liberia having turned a corner from its unprecedented Ebola health emergency, the people and Government now had the important work of continuing to build a unified and reconciled nation fully responsible for its own destiny, the top United Nations peacekeeping official told the Security Council today.

On 9 September 2015, the Security Council Committee pursuant to resolutions 1267 (1999) and 1989 (2011) concerning Al-Qaida and associated individuals and entities removed the name below from the Al-Qaida Sanctions List after concluding its consideration of the delisting requests for this name submitted through the Office of the Ombudsperson established pursuant to Security Council resolution 1904 (2009), and after considering the Comprehensive Report of the Ombudsperson on this delisting request.

On 3 September 2015, the Security Council Committee pursuant to resolutions 1267 (1999) and 1989 (2011) approved the addition of the entry specified below to its Al-Qaida Sanctions List of individuals and entities subject to the assets freeze, travel ban and arms embargo set out in paragraph 1 of Security Council resolution 2161 (2014) adopted under Chapter VII of the Charter of the United Nations.
