The following Security Council press statement was issued today by Council President Juan Ramón de la Fuente Ramírez (Mexico):

On 9 November 2021, the Security Council Committee established pursuant to resolution 2140 (2014) approved the addition of the entries specified below to its Sanctions List of individuals and entities subject to the measures imposed by Security Council resolutions 2140 (2014) and 2216 (2015) and adopted under Chapter VII of the Charter of the United Nations.

Following are UN Secretary-General António Guterres remarks to the open debate of the Security Council on “Maintenance of International Peace and Security:  Exclusion, Inequality and Conflicts”, held today:

The Security Council discussed today the importance of addressing exclusion, inequality and conflicts, as members adopted a presidential statement aimed at reaffirming its primary responsibility under the Charter of the United Nations for the maintenance of international peace and security.

Meeting today to discuss urgent action to de-escalate the potentially disastrous conflict in Ethiopia, speakers in the Security Council extended their support for the African Union’s regional peace initiative and urged the Ethiopian authorities and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front and its allied forces to enter a ceasefire, allow for unhindered humanitarian access and engage dialogue towards a political solution.

Meeting independently from but concurrently with the General Assembly, the Security Council today filled one open seat in the International Court of Justice.

On 29 October 2021, the Security Council Committee established pursuant to resolution 2140 (2014) updated its Guidelines for the Conduct of its Work.

On 22 October 2021, the Security Council Committee pursuant to resolution 751 (1992) concerning Somalia held informal consultations to hear a briefing by the Deputy Head of the Global Maritime Crime Programme, United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), on the Programme’s support to the implementation of resolution 2551 (2020).
