The following Security Council press statement was issued today by Council President Samantha Power (United States):

The Security Council this afternoon welcomed the formation of a new Iraqi Government and supported the “collaboration of all States” to help it fight the armed group calling itself the “Islamic State”, or ISIL, at a meeting addressed by many State Ministers and chaired by United States Secretary of State John Kerry.

With the early results of an investigation into the downing of a Malaysian airline over Ukraine showing that the jet was hit by "high-energy objects”, the priority now was to prevent a repeat of that tragedy, the Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs told the Security Council this morning.

Determining that the “unprecedented extent” of the Ebola outbreak in Africa constituted a threat to international peace and security, the Security Council this afternoon called on Member States to respond urgently to the crisis and to refrain from isolating the affected countries.

Protracted deadlock in Afghanistan over the result of presidential elections deepened a crisis that had already taken a heavy political, security and economic toll, the Secretary-General’s Special Representative in that country told the Security Council today.

On 10 September 2014, the Security Council’s 2140 Sanctions Committee met to discuss the interim report of the Panel of Experts on Yemen, presented by its Coordinator.

Proposing a package of measures to "fundamentally change the dynamics" in Gaza, the Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process told the Security Council this morning that it was critical to act swiftly while a fragile ceasefire held.

As negotiations on Iran’s nuclear programme continued, the 1737 Committee on Iran sanctions would continue its work of monitoring implementation, investigating alleged violations and responding to requests for guidance from Member States, its Chair told the Security Council this afternoon.

Describing a crisis situation in Libya as deteriorating towards chaos, the Secretary-General's new Special Representative, briefing the Security Council, pledged the perseverance of the United Nations in efforts to engage the parties in a political solution to end the factional armed violence.
