At its third formal meeting on 30 August 2019, the Security Council Committee established pursuant to resolution 1970 (2011) concerning Libya held a discussion with representatives to the United Nations of Libya, Algeria, Bahrain, Chad, Cyprus, Egypt, Greece, Italy, Jordan, Lebanon, Mali, Malta, Morocco, Niger, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, the Syrian Arab Republic, Tunisia, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates to strengthen the dialogue on the effective implementation of the sanctions measures (arms embargo, travel ban, assets freeze and measures in relation to attempts to illicitly export petroleum) imposed by the Security Council in relation to Libya.

The international community must build on August’s Eid al-Adha humanitarian truce in Libya with a strong and unequivocal message that emphasizes respect for the arms embargo, non-interference in Tripoli’s affairs and support for whatever political future Libyans might agree to, the top United Nations official in the country told the Security Council today.

On 29 July 2019, Virginia Gamba, Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict, and Pramila Patten, Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict, briefed the 2127 Sanctions Committee concerning the Central African Republic and the Working Group on Children and Armed Conflict.

With the delicate political process intended to resolve the crisis in Syria entering a critical phase, senior United Nations officials called today for immediate Security Council action to ensure a ceasefire is in place in that country’s north-western Idlib Governorate amid a surge in civilian casualties and ongoing attacks on key infrastructure.
