United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has appointed Yesim Oruc of Türkiye as the United Nations Resident Coordinator in the Republic of Moldova, with the host Government’s approval, starting on 22 August.

On Friday, 19 August, the Secretary-General travelled from Odesa to Chisinau, the capital of the Republic of Moldova, where he met the President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, for a working dinner during which they reviewed the situation in Moldova and the region in light of the on-going war in Ukraine.
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres arrived in the Republic of Moldova from New York on Monday morning, 9 May, for a two-day visit to express his solidarity and to thank the Republic of Moldova for its steadfast support for peace, and for its people’s generosity in opening their hearts and homes to almost half a million Ukrainian refugees fleeing the war.
Despite an overall decrease in violence against civilians in South Sudan, cases of conflict-related sexual violence more than doubled between January and March, a new report issued by the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS). It documented 63 cases during that period, up from 28 in the corresponding time period last year.

Some 175,000 people in Ethiopia have been displaced from their homes due to the drought ravaging the Horn of Africa, and over 1.5 million cows and other livestock are estimated to have died, humanitarian affairs officials say. The drought also displaced 670,000 men, women and children in neighbouring Somalia.
