The Secretary-General arrived in Geneva from Hong Kong on Wednesday evening, 2 July. Upon his arrival he met with the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva, Vladimir Petrovsky. They discussed the impact of United Nations reform on Geneva, as well as matters before the Conference on Disarmament.

Expressing grave concern at the continued escalation of military confrontation in Afghanistan, the Security Council this afternoon called for an immediate end to the fighting there.

The passage of the Married Persons Equality Act was a major development in the area of legal capacity in Namibia, the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women was told this morning by that country's Director- General of Women's Affairs in the Office of the President.
