INTERNATIONAL DAY IN SUPPORT OF TORTURE VICTIMS OBSERVED 26 JUNE

The third International Day in Support of Victims of Torture will be observed on Monday, 26 June. The Day, proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly on 12 December 1997, aims at eliminating torture and ensuring the application of the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, which entered into force on 26 June 1987.

NON-GOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATION COMMITTEE RECOMMENDS STATUS SUSPENSION FOR COUNCIL OF THE ASSOCIATION FOR PEACE IN THE CONTINENTS

The Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) this morning recommended a three-year suspension by the Economic and Social Council of the consultative status of the International Council of the Association for Peace in the Continents (ASOPAZCO).

On his way to Damascus from Jerusalem, the Secretary-General travelled to Ramalah to meet with Yassir Arafat, Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization and President of the Palestinian Authority.
