A group of 15 senior African journalists from every region of the continent have today completed an intensive programme of briefings and interviews organized by the Department of Public Information (DPI) at United Nations Headquarters, designed to promote a better understanding within Africa of United Nations efforts for the continent.
While reluctance to use positive discrimination to close the wide gap in gender equality between men and women was understandable, that might often be the only way to correct years of subtle discriminatory practices, the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women was told this afternoon.

The Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations this afternoon suspended its resumed session and decided to recommend that the Economic and Social Council authorize it to meet again from 8 to 19 January 2001 to complete the work of its 2000 session.

As the Preparatory Commission for the International Criminal Court entered the final stages of its work on two key texts necessary to the Court's functioning, its Chairman this morning urged delegates to not lose their perspective on what the international community was trying to do by establishing the Court.
