Following is the text of opening remarks made today by Secretary-General Kofi Annan to an International Peace Academy Symposium on Humanitarian Action, also attended by Foreign Minister of the Netherlands, Jozias van Aartsen:
Kofi Annan of Ghana is the seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations. The first Secretary-General to be elected from the ranks of United Nations staff, he began his term on 1 January 1997.
