PRESS STATEMENT BY SECURITY COUNCIL PRESIDENT ON PAPUA NEW GUINEA/BOUGAINVILLE


Following is the text of today’s press statement on Papua New Guinea/Bougainville by the President of the Security Council, Alfonso Valdivieso (Colombia):


Members of the Security Council heard a briefing from the Head of the United Nations Political Office in Bougainville.


This was the first time Council members had discussed the situation in Bougainville since March 2001.

SECRETARY-GENERAL CONDEMNS UNITA ATTACK ON TRAIN IN ANGOLA


Following is the text of a statement issued today attributable to the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:


The Secretary-General condemns the deliberate attack on a train, on

10 August in which a very high number of civilians were killed.  He notes that UNITA has claimed, and therefore bears the responsibility, for this indefensible loss of life.

LIEUTENANT-GENERAL WINAI PHATTIYAKUL APPOINTED FORCE COMMANDER


OF UN TRANSITIONAL ADMINISTRATION IN EAST TIMOR


Secretary-General Kofi Annan announced today the appointment of Lieutenant-General Winai Phattiyakul as Force Commander of the United Nations Transitional Administration in East Timor, to succeed Lieutenant-General BoonsrangNiumpradit who will relinquish the command on 31 August.
