LIEUTENANT-GENERAL WINAI PHATTIYAKUL APPOINTED FORCE COMMANDER
OF UN TRANSITIONAL ADMINISTRATION IN EAST TIMOR
Secretary-General Kofi Annan announced today the appointment of Lieutenant-General Winai Phattiyakul as Force Commander of the United Nations Transitional Administration in East Timor, to succeed Lieutenant-General BoonsrangNiumpradit who will relinquish the command on 31 August.
Lieutenant-General Winai Phattiyakul was born in 1948 and has served in the Royal Thai Armed Forces since 1969. He has held several command and staff appointments at the Royal Thai Armed Forces Headquarters. He is currently the Director of the Directorate of Joint Intelligence, Supreme Command Headquarters of the Royal Thai Armed Forces. Previously, he served as Deputy Chief of Joint Intelligence, Joint Operations Center (1996-1997), the Supreme Commander’s Military Assistant for Foreign Relations, (1994-1995), Chief of the Office for Thai-Myanmar Border Security Coordination (1993-1994), Chief of the Division for Armed Forces Security Center (1990-1992), and Deputy Director of the Course Director Division, Army War College (1987-1990). He attended command and staff colleges in Thailand and the United States. He has received the Knight Grand Cordon (Special Class) of the Most Noble Order of the Crown of Thailand and the Knight Grand Cross (First Class) of the Most Exalted Order of the White Elephant.
