Women, peace and security, the rule of law, and the Middle East would be discussed in open debates this month at the Security Council, the Permanent Representative of Guatemala said this afternoon as he introduced the agenda for his October presidency of that body.
United Nations officials today launched an online platform for the exchange of information on expertise to support countries emerging from conflict in building institutions for inclusive governance, security, justice, jobs, economic growth and service delivery among other areas.
The rule of law will take centre stage at United Nations Headquarters next week, as Heads of State and Government gather for the first-ever high-level General Assembly meeting on that topic, and for the 2012 Treaty Event to be held under the same theme, experts involved in those initiatives said at a press conference today.
The United Nations needed to regain relevance to rise to the twenty-first century’s new challenges, including the recent food and financial crises, the Senior Vice-President of the Economic and Social Council told reporters today at Headquarters, as he announced a special ministerial meeting on sustainable development — “Building the Future We Want” — to be held here on 24 September.
Amid warnings by a new United Nations report that significant development gains worldwide risked backsliding due to the slowdown in providing aid, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called today for a stronger global partnership to advance progress towards poverty eradication, sustainable growth and other development targets that world leaders had pledged to achieve by 2015.
Solutions to bridge the massive gap in access to sustainable energy between the global North and South – particularly solutions emanating from the South – would be showcased at an innovative international expo in November, experts involved in organizing the event said at a Headquarters press conference today.
