Press Conference

Upholding the credibility of the Security Council will be the focus of that organ’s United States presidency in December, the country’s Permanent Representative said at a Headquarters press conference today.

The United Kingdom’s presidency of the Security Council in November will highlight the importance of reconciliation in peacebuilding, and the plight of individuals in ongoing situations of concern around the world, that country’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations said at a Headquarters press conference today.

Peace and security in Africa, as well as ongoing situations of concern elsewhere, will top the agenda of the Security Council in October, Jerry Matthews Matjila (South Africa), Council President for the month, told correspondents at a Headquarters press conference today.

The Security Council will convene two ministerial meetings in September, the first on cooperation between the United Nations and regional organizations and the second on peace and security in Africa, Vassily A. Nebenzia (Russian Federation), its President for September, said today.

An open debate on children and armed conflict on 2 August and a high-level briefing on international humanitarian law on 13 August will be among the highlights of the Security Council’s programme for August, Joanna Wronecka (Poland), Council President for the month, said today.

Gustavo Meza-Cuadra (Peru), Security Council President for July, outlining the month’s programme of work at Headquarters today, said a debate on the links between terrorism and organized crime is of particular importance for his country.

The Security Council aims to adopt its first-ever resolution on missing persons in situations of armed conflict when it debates the issue during a high-level meeting on 11 June, Mansour Alotaibi (Kuwait), Council President for the month, said at a Headquarters press conference today.

The Security Council’s programme of work for May will feature two open debates, the first on peacekeeping and the other on protection of civilians in armed conflict, Dian Triansyah Djani (Indonesia), Council President for the month, said at a Headquarters press conference today.
