Attending the third meeting of the International Contact Group on the Central African Republic in Bangui, Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Jeffrey Feltman delivered a strong appeal from United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon for action to address the “dire” situation gripping the country and its population.

The United Nations Counter-Terrorism Centre (UNCCT) in partnership with the Government of Saudi Arabia held a two-day international conference on 16 and 17 February in Riyadh. The meeting brought together participants from national, regional and international counter-terrorism centres, think tanks and Government-sponsored entities and initiatives from all regions of the world.

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appointed Jeffrey D. Feltman of the United States as Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs. Mr. Feltman will replace B. Lynn Pascoe, to whom the Secretary-General is grateful for his dedicated service to the United Nations and for his able leadership of the Department of Political Affairs during a challenging period.

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appointed Tayé-Brook Zerihoun of Ethiopia as the Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs in the Department of Political Affairs. Mr. Zerihoun replaces Haile Menkerios of South Africa, who has been appointed as Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Sudan for a one-year period.

A package of projects to help Somalia and its neighbours prosecute maritime piracy suspects was approved today by a 10-nation board overseeing a new United Nations trust fund for the fight against piracy. The announcement was made at United Nations Headquarters by B. Lynn Pascoe, Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs, who chairs the Board of the Trust Fund to Support Initiatives of States Countering Piracy off the Coast of Somalia.
