Security Council Condemns Renewed Fighting in Somalia, Authorizes African Union Peacekeeping Force to Maintain Mandate until 31 January 2010

Condemning the recent resurgence in fighting in Somalia, the Security Council today authorized the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) peacekeeping force there to maintain its existing mandate until 31 January 2010.

General Assembly Reschedules Conference on World Financial, Economic Crisis to 24-26 June to Foster Consensus on ‘Positive, Forward-Looking’ Outcome

The General Assembly this morning announced its decision to reschedule the Conference on the World Financial and Economic Crisis and Its Impact on Development to 24 to 26 June, from its previously-scheduled dates of 1 to 3 June, and, on another matter, appointed Gönke Roscher of Germany to the Committee on Contributions to a term ending on 31 December 2011, on the recommendation of its Fifth Committee (Administrative and Budgetary).

Budget Committee Takes up 2009/10 Financing for Peacekeeping Missions in Côte d’Ivoire, Haiti, Timor-Leste

Stressing the need to provide adequate financing for United Nations peacekeeping missions in Côte d’Ivoire, Haiti and Timor-Leste, several speakers in the Fifth Committee (Administrative and Budgetary) this morning had questions about the cuts in their proposed budgets for 2009/10, which had been recommended by the Advisory Committee on Administrative and Budgetary Questions (ACABQ).

With the conclusion of its resumed 2009 session, the Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations recommended that the Economic and Social Council grant consultative status to 36 bodies and reclassify one group, and took note of 111 quadrennial reports.

Secretary-General Appoints Robert Watkins of Canada as Deputy Special Representative for Afghanistan

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appointed Robert Watkins of Canada as his Deputy Special Representative for Afghanistan, where he will also serve as United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator. Mr. Watkins replaces Bo Asplund of Sweden, who will be completing his assignment this summer. The Secretary-General is grateful to Mr. Asplund for his dedicated service for the past two years.
