United Nations, International Organizations Announce New Partnership at Energy Summit for Transition to Renewable Energy in Peacekeeping

Today at a United Nations energy summit, the United Nations as well as a group of international organizations and Governments announced a compact to help United Nations peacekeeping missions’ transition to renewable energy.  The initiative responds to the United Nations Secretariat’s commitment to source 80 per cent of its power from renewable energy by 2030, which hinges overwhelmingly on peacekeeping operations.

The humanitarian crisis in Tigray, Ethiopia is spiralling out of control, with 5.3 million people requiring food aid and 400,000 in famine-like conditions, according to United Nations Emergency Relief Coordinator Martin Griffiths.  In the past week, 79 trucks carrying aid arrived in Tigray, but 100 truckloads are needed daily.

Acting unanimously today, the Security Council renewed for another year its authorization for Member States to inspect vessels outside of Libya’s territorial waters, when there are reasonable grounds to believe they are participating in acts of migrant smuggling and human trafficking.
