The Secretary-General flew to Washington, D.C. on Monday afternoon, 18 October, for a two-day visit. On arrival, he taped an interview for the public television programme “NewsHour with Jim Lehrer”. That evening, he attended a dinner hosted by World Bank President, James Wolfensohn.

DRAFT TEXT ON BIOLOGICAL WEAPONS CONVENTION INTRODUCED IN DISARMAMENT COMMITTEE

According to a draft resolution introduced this morning in the First Committee (Disarmament and International Security), the General Assembly would call upon all States parties to the Biological Weapons Convention to accelerate negotiations for a protocol, including possible verification measures, to strengthen the Convention.

As the Sixth Committee concluded its discussion of the work of the Preparatory Commission of the International Criminal Court (ICC), speakers again urged early ratification of the Court’s Statute and stressed that the Court must not be used as a political tool.
