General Assembly President Urges Member States to Chart Course That Will Enhance Role of United Nations in Global Governance

Amid mounting concern that the United Nations was losing ground to smaller and more agile groupings, the General Assembly — during the main part of its sixty-fifth session — was repeatedly urged to redeploy its heavy political capital and near-universal membership to regain its pre-eminence, and breathe new life into the very principles that had called the Organization into being: peace and security, friendship among nations and international cooperation.

Secretary-General Appoints Karin Landgren of Sweden His Special Representative in Burundi

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today announced the appointment of Karin Landgren ( Sweden) as his new Special Representative and Head of the United Nations Office in Burundi (BNUB). The Secretary-General is grateful to Charles Petrie for his service to the Organization, and for his commitment in leading the United Nations Integrated Office in Burundi (BINUB) at a critical period as Executive Representative.

Independent Audit Advisory Committee Ends Session

The Independent Audit Advisory Committee of the United Nations (IAAC) held its twelfth session from 15 to 16 December. The session, which was held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, was presided over by the Chairman, David M. Walker, with all the members of IAAC, namely, Vadim V. Dubinkin, Vice-Chairman Vijayendra N. Kaul, John F.S. Muwanga and Adrian P. Strachan, in attendance.

Secretary-General’s Outgoing Representative in Nepal Spells Out Stark Choices for Conclusion of Peace Process as United Nations Mission Winds Down

The peace process in Nepal could either be brought to a close in a satisfactory manner, through the negotiated resolution of outstanding issues, or abortively, with one or more parties reneging on their solemn commitments, the Secretary-General’s Representative in that country told the Security Council today.
